The Meaning of Marriage: A Vision for Single and Married People

Hello Grace Family!

The marriage team is excited to be giving you a fantastic way to begin the new year…Timothy Keller is coming to Grace and he would like to talk to YOU….well,“kinda”…virtually, at least! Here are the details:

Modern culture would have you believe that everyone has a soul mate; that romance is the most important part of a successful marriage; that marriage does not mean ’til death do us part, but merely for as long as my needs are being met; and that when serious differences arise, divorce is the best solution.

According to the Bible, all of these modern-day assumptions miss what marriage is all about. In this six-session video-based Bible study, Timothy Keller, along with Kathy, his wife of forty years, draws a profound portrait of marriage from the pages of Scripture that neither idealizes nor rejects the institution but points us back to the relationship between God and man. The result is a vision for marriage that is refreshingly frank and unsentimental, yet hopeful and beautiful.

This study is for anyone from singles to couples considering marriage to those who have been married recently or for a long time.

Sessions include:

  1. Service: Marriage Isn’t about You
  2. Covenant: Created to Make Promises
  3. Roles: Loving through Mutual Submission
  4. Singleness: Strengthening the Spiritual Family
  5. Sex: The Act of Covenant Renewal
  6. Hope: Seeing the Great Horizon

We will be meeting each week from January 7th – February 11th in room 205 during the first service and would LOVE to have you join us. Each participant would need to purchase their own study guide (available on Amazon for $8.38) and, if possible, one copy of the book The Meaning of Marriage by Timothy Keller (available at Amazon for $11.03), which is also explored as a part of the homework. The study has 3 parts:

  1. Home Study (on your own to prepare for the group time)
  2. Group Time (in which you will consider how to apply the principles you have studied). Most questions are relevant to both married and single people, though there are a couple in each session that particularly apply to marriage)
  3. Marriage Plan (a weekly exercise to help couples apply what they are learning in a practical way)

We hope that you will plan to give your life and/or your relationship a wonderful gift in the new year!!

As you ring in the New Year, we hope that you will consider giving yourself and/or your relationship the gift of deeper understanding of God’s intention for marriage. This set of classes is different from the ones we have offered in the past and is recommended for both singles and those in a relationship!! (see the original description from the first post)

The DVD series requires the purchase of a DVD study guide for each person attending and it is highly recommended that you also purchase the book by the same title The Meaning of Marriage by Timothy Keller, as there are reading assignments from that book as well. In fact, before the first class, next Sunday, the assignment is to read the first two chapters in the book, pp 14 – 77 (don’t worry, the pages are not densely printed and Keller is an engaging writer).

Please sign up so we can know how many to plan for!! Hope to see you there!!

Grace Community Church

A love for Jesus Christ and an ardent desire to see Him glorified in the inner city of Greensboro were the impetus for the founding of this non-denominational body of believers. We are striving to bring together God’s people from all walks of life that each might minister to the other according to their gifts and abilities. Our highest aim is that we might together demonstrate the reality of Christ as we are made one.
